Rescuing River

Elisa had a few odd coordinates set for her world into her PINpoint, the chief among them being the Castle.  Tonight, though, she reappeared elsewhere, not to far from one of Manhattan's many hopsitals.  It was a risky proposition for her.  People still weren't all that accepting of Gargoyles, but with a friend in danger, she didn't have much choice.

So it was that she burst through the emergency room doors with River in her arms.  "Need some help over here!"

In the city that never sleeps, even at this late hour, there were plenty of people there.  Some looked frightened, others merely puzzled, and there was the security guard going for his gun...

Elisa's tail lashed out and wrapped around the gun, pulling it from his fingers.  "Don't try it.  And somebody get a damn doctor!"

The petite young woman gave her a glower that had been known to make tall men step back, then winced and shut her eyes as tensing up made for ow.

"Fine."

Elisa's faced down everything from Demona to Oberon himself, but at the moment, she'd rather deal with something like that than River's glare.

"All right," she says. "I don't think she's going to get any more ready."

He slipped inside without moving the curtain too much and walked over to look down at his patient, a line forming between his brows as he noted the signs of exhaustion in her features. "Have you been sleeping?"

"Not alot," came the grudging reply.

"Too much pain?"

"I don't sleep anyway."

Not for the first time, Elisa ponders just what it is about her that seems to insure most of her friends are people with such giantic problems. Faye, Harley, Victor, River, and others.

It was enough to give a girl a complex.

"So is this not sleeping is a normal thing?" Wilson grabbed the light from the wall and peered into her eyes.

River frowned at him and he blinked. "What?"

"What's with all the @#$%&$ questions?" She gave him the glower.

Wilson was supremely immune to it. "They're part of finding out what kind of help you need."

While she was probably in her bad books now, Elisa hoped that River would forgive her for this. As far as she'd been concerned, there wasn't any choice. She'd seen someone in need of help and acted.

"Doctor-patient confidentiality, River," Elisa supplies. "Anything you say here doesn't go beyond here."

The younger woman glanced at her, thwarting Wilson's attempts to look into her eyes. "Oh."

Elisa nods in response to the 'oh.' "You're safe here, kiddo. Everything's gonna be okay."

Wilson frowned slightly as he finally managed to see inside her eyes. "You hit your head pretty hard at sometime in the past, huh?"

"Yeah... why? Did I knock something loose?" River frowned.

"Yeah, sort of." He straightened with a frown of concern, then moved his fingers past her line of sight. "Look at the fingers."

Hmm? This has Elisa's full attention. She's usually got a good idea for details, but obviously she's missed something about River...

Probably because River's missed it herself. "Sup?"

"Your right eye's got something in the back of it, and it doesn't track as well as it should." He frowned. "I think we need a few pictures of your brain."

"Do whatever you need to, Doctor," Elisa says. Granted, she can't actually make medical decisions for River, but... Well, she's just got command in her blood.

"Whoa, whoa." River's eyes widened. "How the @#$%&$%$ do you take pictures of a brain?"

"MRI. CAT scan. That sort of thing." He gently untied the broken arm and moved it very slightly so that he could listen to her heart and lungs. "While we're at it we'll get some X-rays of your back and arm."

"Oh." River took a deep breath, the only sign that she was nearly scared out of her mind.

Elisa moves closer to River and rests a hand on her shoulder. "It'll be okay, River. They do this kinda thing all the time. Routine stuff. And I'll be here the whole time."

Assuming it doesn't hit sunrise before all's said and done.

She looked up at the older woman, dark eyes showing nothing of her relief as she clung doggedly to her mask of toughness. "Okay."

Wilson wrote rapidly, then looked up. "Are you wearing anything metallic? You'll need to take that off before we can do the scans."

River blinked, then scowled as she reached up with her good hand and pulled a tiny silver cross pendant on a piece of fish line out of the front of her shirt.

"I can hold on to that for you, River," Elisa says.

She looked at her for a long moment, almost glaring, though it was absent as she prayed and tried to psych herself to let the cross go.

"I'll go bully make sure the lab techs are ready." Wilson gave them a grin and turned on his heel to disappear past the curtain.

For someone who prides herself on her observational skills, Elisa can be pretty dim sometimes.

"I'm sorry," she says. "I shouldn't have..."

"You're gonna have to take it off," said River quietly. "I can't reach that high."

Elisa nods. "All right. I'll do this nice and gentle."

Once she has taken it off, she offers it back to River to hold in case she wants to hang on to it until the last second.

Her hand went out, but then paused as she heard the gurney coming toward the room.

Elisa offers her a small, reassuring smile. "I'll be here as long as you need me, River. At least, until sunrise."

River nodded, then turned her eyes toward the attendant who shoved the curtain aside.

One thing's for sure, nobody's likely to try anything when someone's brought in by a Gargoyle. Of course, the news of such may eventually bring about unwanted media attention, but...

That's a bridge to burn when they get to it.

Hour or so later

Wilson left the exhausted River sleeping on the gurney and walked out of the internal imaging lab to see where the winged woman had gone.
