Rescuing River

Elisa had a few odd coordinates set for her world into her PINpoint, the chief among them being the Castle.  Tonight, though, she reappeared elsewhere, not to far from one of Manhattan's many hopsitals.  It was a risky proposition for her.  People still weren't all that accepting of Gargoyles, but with a friend in danger, she didn't have much choice.

So it was that she burst through the emergency room doors with River in her arms.  "Need some help over here!"

In the city that never sleeps, even at this late hour, there were plenty of people there.  Some looked frightened, others merely puzzled, and there was the security guard going for his gun...

Elisa's tail lashed out and wrapped around the gun, pulling it from his fingers.  "Don't try it.  And somebody get a damn doctor!"

For someone who prides herself on her observational skills, Elisa can be pretty dim sometimes.

"I'm sorry," she says. "I shouldn't have..."

"You're gonna have to take it off," said River quietly. "I can't reach that high."

Elisa nods. "All right. I'll do this nice and gentle."

Once she has taken it off, she offers it back to River to hold in case she wants to hang on to it until the last second.

Her hand went out, but then paused as she heard the gurney coming toward the room.

Elisa offers her a small, reassuring smile. "I'll be here as long as you need me, River. At least, until sunrise."

River nodded, then turned her eyes toward the attendant who shoved the curtain aside.

One thing's for sure, nobody's likely to try anything when someone's brought in by a Gargoyle. Of course, the news of such may eventually bring about unwanted media attention, but...

That's a bridge to burn when they get to it.

Hour or so later

Wilson left the exhausted River sleeping on the gurney and walked out of the internal imaging lab to see where the winged woman had gone.

Elisa had spent some of the time making phone calls. Firstly to let Goliath and the others know where she was, and another to arrange with Xanatos for taking care of River's medical bills.

Now she'd found a rather uncomfortable chair near where they'd taken River for her tests.

"Elisa?" he called, feeling a little tired himself after watching River play tough for that long and seeing everything that the X-rays had disclosed.

With a slight grunt, she rises from the chair, stretching for a minute to work the kinks out of her system. "What's up, Doc? How is she?"

"Right now she's sedated and sleeping." He sighed and found himself stretching as though catching it from Elisa. "She'll need surgery on that arm, a body cast, and a lot of peaceful bed rest."

"She'll never agree to any of that," Elisa says. And she's not family, so she can't make medical decisons for River. "She's got a brother... I should try and get ahold of him."

"She hasn't got a lot of choice if she ever wants to use the arm or get around normally." His frown deepened as he thought again of the X-rays and scans. "That would probably be a good idea.... Do you know anything about her?"

The cop in Elisa recognizes that particular type and tone of question. "I don't think she's being abused, if that's what you're asking."

The woman is... or was... a cop, he remembered. "The evidence states otherwise. But the sooner we get her treated the sooner she can start healing. Do you think you can find the brother?"

"I think I should be able to," Elisa says. She'll let the other point drop, for the moment. No sense arguing, especially since it would mean spilling secrets that weren't hers to do so.

"How soon do you think you could get him here?" He was itching to tell someone exactly what was wrong and try and figure out how any human being could leave a kid's wounds untreated like Rivers had been.

Honestly, with the Nexus, it could take a great deal of time. "As soon as huma---*ahem* As soon as possible," she says.

"Alright." He nodded and sighed wearily. "We really need to get that arm put back together."

Eventually, Elisa returns with Simon in tow. Finding any specific individual in the Nexus is not exactly easy, but she'd been able to pull it off.

She'd also taken the liberty of PINpointing in to an empty coridor near where she'd last spoken with Wilson.

He started and pushed off from where he'd been leaning his shoulder against the wall to scowl. But then his expression cleared as he saw Simon striding toward him with anger and determination in every line of his body.

"You DON'T want to grab me," he said calmly. "Trust me. It will only slow down your getting to see your sister."

Elisa placed a restraining hand of her own on Simon's shoulder, squeezing just enough to give a healthy reminder of her strength. "He's here to help, Simon. Just like me."

He turned his head and gave her a look, then turned back to the flaky-looking doctor. "How much is this going to cost?"

Bluster, to cover a concern so acute that all the bad@#$%&$ attitude in the world isn't covering it.

"Don't worry about it," said Wilson, glancing at Elisa as he turned and led the way down the hall and toward the elevator.

,b>Definitely more to Doctor Wilson than meets the eye, Elisa thinks, momentarily suspicious. But she's generally a good judge of character and he hasn't set off any of her alarm bells just yet.

But it does bear watching.

She folds her wings and starts to follow, uncertain for a moment, but not about to leave when she's promised to stay.
